The English Cogger Partnership is committed to improvement in standards and our research work provides the opportunity to ensure that appropriate standards are followed throughout the acoustics field. We often form consorta with reserachers and academics to ensure that there is a balance between practical and theoretical approaches to the problems addressed by the research. NMS Project 2.2: Environmental Noise The English Cogger Partnership is part of a consortium with Hoare Lea Acoustics, Berry Environmental Limited, Ian H Flindell & Associates and Nicole Porter which has won a contract with the DTI, researching "A Guide to Envienomental Noise Management". The Project includes a comprehensive evalutaion of both technical and procedural uncertainties of 'background noise' and 'specific noise' . The guide produced will strike an appropriate balance between informed flexibility and prescriptive guidance of noise measurement surveys. New British Standard for Environmental Noise Management We are members of a small consortium of reasearchers and consultants commissioned by the British Standards Institution to write a new standard, BS 9142, Environmental Noise Management. It is inteded that this will provide clear quidance on which standards and regulations should be applied to ensure an appropriate level of control of envrinometal noise, for a wide range of circumstances. The work involves preparation of draft standard and organising public debates within the industry to refine the document prior to publication. Revision of DMRB Volume 11. The Partnership is part of a consortium led by the Transport Research Laboratory which has been appointed by the Highways Agency to undertake a revision of its guidance on the Environmental Assessment of road schemes. Our practical experience gained in undertaking the acoustic design of many motorway and trunk road schemes and the preparation of Environmental Impact Assessments for these schemes complements TRL's in-house acoustics research expertise. The advice on noise given in the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, Volume 11 was last revised in 1994 and the current study is designed to reflect the changes in EIA practice that have occurred since that time and provide a more user oriented guide to assessment. Building Bulletin 93 Noise control and acoustics is schools are now included in The Building Regulations 2000, Part E and we were mebers of the comitee commissioned by the DfES to prepare Building Bulletin 93, which provides the performance standars for the acoustics of schools and the means of demonstrating complience with the Regulaitons. Revision of DMRB Volume 10 We carried out a detailed study into the options for traffic noise reduction by the increased use of sound absorptive materials in the road corridor. revisions of DMRB Volume 10 sections HA 65/95 and HA 66/95 on noise barrier design were then drafted to inclued design advice for other noise absorbing structures. |
