Kings Cross Central |
Client: Argent St. George |
|
![]() |
King's Cross Central is a mixed commercial, residential and leisure development on a site comprising 72 acres of brownfield land that will become available for redevelopment once the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project is competed. The site is surrounded by railways and busy roads and we have been working with the developer to ensure that the master-plan includes appropriate land uses in the noisier parts of the site. High quality public open space will be provided alongside the Regent's Canal by screening the area from the railway. The environmental design and assessment work includes the noise and vibration from surface and underground railways, roads and construction. Noise and vibration control within the retained listed buildings and the new buildings is also included in our work. |

London International Freight Exchange |
Client: Argent (LIFE) PLC |
|
![]() |
The London International Freight Exchange is planned as a major transport hub, designed to facilitate the return of freight movement to the railways. The project is to occupy a 182 ha site to the west of the M25. An independent review of the Environmental Statement was carried out and additional noise and vibration studies were undertaken. The railway access to the site passes close to residential properties and substantial noise barriers were designed to reduce the train noise to acceptable levels. Expert evidence was presented at the Public Inquires held in 2000 for the planning application and railway modifications under the Transport Works Act. |
|
Castle Donington Regional Storage and Distribution Centre |
Client: Wilson Bowden Developments |
|
![]() |
Independent review of the Environmental Statement prepared for the proposed intermodal storage and distribution facility at the former power station site at Castle Donington and provision of advice on noise mitigation. Preparation and presentation of evidence at Public Inquiry. |
|
Elstow Garden Villages |
Client: Gallagher Estates & Innogy |
|
![]() |
Elstow Garden Villages is a development of 4500 homes and associated commercial developments occupying over 300 ha to the south of Bedford. The site is bounded by the A6, Midland Mainline Railway and also a proposed major landfill site. Advice has been given on controlling the impact of noise from these sources on the planned housing. The scheme includes the reallignment of the A6 to the edge of the development and a supplementary environmental statement was prepared for the realignment of the A6 |
|
Morbain: Weston Street Bus Depot, Bolton |
Client: Morbaine Ltd |
|
![]() |
First Group is planning to move its bus depot from the centre of Bolton to a site on the outskirts of the town. We carried out an environmental noise assessment for the site covering the impacts of bus movements, particularly at anti-social times of the day, and maintenance operations on site. The workshop building envelope and the boundary screening were designed to control noise breakout from the site. We also negotiated suitable planning conditions relating to noise with the local authority. These also included designing the qualification criteria for a noise insulation scheme for those properties closest to the access route to the depot. This is one of many similar projects that we have carried out for First Group. |
|
Northwest Cambridge |
Client: EDAW |
|
![]() |
EDAW is masterplanning a 120 hectare site in Cambridge for the University of Cambridge. The site, which is close to the M11, is where the University proposes to develop some 2000 homes and also new colleges and research facilities. The study identified the traffic noise constraints upon masterplanning of the site and provided a strategy for noise control in order that the use of the site could be optimised in the masterplan. |
|
Central Edinburgh Traffic Management |
Client: Ove Arup Scotland |
|
![]() |
The City of Edinburgh Council is planning to prohibit all private transport from Princes Street, following the successful implementation of a one way traffic scheme. We carried out an assessment of the changes in traffic noise that would occur throughout the city and prepared the noise and vibration sections of the Environmental Statement. This involved the application of research studies into congested traffic flows, as the traffic conditions were outside the range of the official calculation method. Specific studies were carried out into the risk of vibration causing damage to Georgian cellars and into night-time noise. Expert evidence was given to the hearing into the objections to the scheme. |
|
M4 Junction 11 |
Client: Peter Brett Associates |
|
![]() |
Junction 11 on the M4 forms the primary gateway to Reading and is a major bottleneck. The redesign of this junction moved traffic nearer to housing and we analysed the impact of the scheme and designed a noise mitigation strategy to ensure that there was no increase in noise due to the scheme. Subsequently we prepared the noise and vibration assessments for the Environmental Statement. |
|
M3 Bar End - Bassett |
Client: FPD Savills |
|
![]() |
When the section of the M3 through the Twyford Gap was first opened the residents of Twyford and nearby villages were told that they lived too far from the scheme to qualify for compensation. We carried out an independent assessment of the noise impact at the residential properties affected and successfully negotiated with the Highways Agency representatives and the Valuation Office for compensation under the Land Compensation Act. In some cases it was necessary to prepare evidence for a Lands Tribunal hearing, where agreement was not reached, in order to achieve a satisfactory outcome. |
|
Rockingham Motor Speedway, Corby |
Client: Rockingham |
|
![]() |
We have acted
as acoustic consultants to Rockingham throughout the development of their
motor racing circuit, the only American oval circuit in the UK. Environmental
assessments were carried out for the circuit and also for additional grandstands,
which required the removal of a perimeter mound. Monitoring has been carried
out of operational noise at events to ensure compliance with conditions
on noise. We are now negotiating suitable noise limits for evening and
night-time use of the track. |
|
Rassau Power Station |
Client: Enron Europe Ltd |
|
![]() |
The proposed 1200 MW power station at Rassau, Wales has been delayed for several years by the Government's moratorium on gas fired power stations. The study included a revision of the earlier environmental noise impact assessment for the proposed gas fired power station, continuous noise monitoring at the nearest community and negotiation of suitable noise limits with the local authority. |
|
Windfarms, Scotland |
Client: Arup Scotland |
|
![]() |
We have carried out several environmental assessment for proposed windfarms in Scotland for Airtricity and Scottish Power projects. These assessments cover the operational noise of the windfarm as well as the noise effects during construction. As the scale of these projects has increased, our input to the site layout and turbine selection has become more critical. |
|
Swallowcroft Methane Project |
Client: Staffordshire County Council |
|
![]() |
A planning application for four pilot wells for a coalbed methane pilot scheme at Seabridge, Newcastle under Lyme was refused by Staffordshire County Council against the advice of their officers. The applicant appealed and we were asked to carry out an independent review of the noise impact of the proposed four wells. Our extensive knowledge of onshore oil exploration in the 1980's allowed us to identify deficiencies in the proposals and we were then commissioned to present expert evidence at public inquiry on behalf of the minerals planning authority. |
